The “Friends of Bydgoszcz” Association is one of the oldest of its type in the region and in Poland, dating from the year 1832. In 1898, during the Prussian annexation, the “Society for Embellishing the City of Bydgoszcz” was deactivated. After many years, in 1923, The “Friends of Bydgoszcz” Association was brought into being and has continued its honourable traditions to date. According to its constitution, The Association cultivates and propagates the beauty of the city, its traditions and culture, in the region as well as at home and abroad. Wide publishing activities are particularly worth mentioning at this point, for example the substantial, multilingual albums “Because it is Bydgoszcz”, ”Pope John Paul II in Bydgoszcz”, and “Musical Bydgoszcz” – all of which emphasize the great culture-creating role of the city, just as do the popular periodicals “Kronika Bydgoska” and “Kalendarz Bydgoski”.

The Association, on the initiative of Ewa Puls, a research worker at the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, carries out a unique educational programme for schools entitled “Bydgoszcz my Little Homeland”, which is a practical form of realizing the educational, interdisciplinary course “Regional education – cultural legacy in the region”. On the initiative of The Friends of Bydgoszcz numerous concerts are organized during which the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Pomorska Concert Hall, the Opera Nova, the Feliks Nowowiejski Musical Academy and the Artur Rubinstein State Music Schools present the greatest musical works of international importance. The Association protects places of commemoration and monuments; for example the Henryk Sienkiewicz monument in Bydgoszcz was one of the first to be erected in Poland, and the stone commemorating the stay of the first Polish marshal Józef Piłsudski on 6 and 7 June 1921 has lately been restored. Since 1923 the contest “Bydgoszcz in Flowers and Greenery” has been organized, ranking Bydgoszcz among the greenest cities in Poland.

The Friends of Bydgoszcz undertook to publish the unique “Encyclopedia of Bydgoszcz”. In Poland only Warszaw and Cracow can boast such an encyclopedia. We would be grateful for any interesting materials that can prove helpful in this publishing venture. We intend to create a Polish Section of The Friends of Bydgoszcz Association – aimed at all Polish inhabitants of Bydgoszcz living all over the world.
